Through practicing yoga during both of my pregnancies, and working with thousands of pregnant women over the past 20+ years, I have witnessed and experienced the tremendous contribution that yoga can make for a healthy, enjoyable pregnancy and a conscious and positive birth and parenthood experience.

Pregnant people in our culture tend to have very limited birth preparation, often just a one-day intensive course on birth preparation and perhaps a half day course on newborn parenting and breastfeeding. Most are in their third trimester by the time they take these classes, and have missed the opportunity to learn valuable tools earlier that could greatly enhance and empower their experience of pregnancy and birth. Prenatal and postnatal yoga can provide these tools and education about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care throughout the childbearing year.

Along with poses to safely open, strengthen, stretch and relax the body and the mind, prenatal yoga practice includes special meditations, breath practices, visualizations, affirmations, and pain management techniques. The practice builds focus and resilience, and enables women and pregnant folks to feel a greater sense of strength, vitality, grace, calm, confidence, and playfulness.

Class discussion may also include recommendations of excellent prenatal, birth prep, and baby care resources, and discussion around topics such as doulas, the mind in labor, managing stress, and birth choices. Many find the camaraderie with other pregnant people to be a deeply nourishing highlight.

Yoga practice during pregnancy can prepare you in labor to be able to breathe down to your baby, to focus, visualize and vocalize through contractions, and to trust in your body's knowing. It helps you better understand how to move, stretch and rest your body in alignment with gravity to work with labor and help baby move down. Yoga can help you to come back to your center over and over, stay connected with your baby, and tap into and trust the power of birth. Yoga training can also help you meet the moment with more presence and less fear when labor is challenging and takes unexpected turns.
